The only way to create a fair and equal society is for the society to recognize the role of women in achieving it. The chair Mahmoud Darwich/BOZAR and Xén(o)- embrace this idea to present What world are we dreaming in?, two evenings devoted to the art of protest and commitment of principally female (or who identify themselves as female) and LGBTQI+ artists. The intersection of social inequalities linked to gender, origin, sexual orientation and social class is the source for the artist’s creative and critical expression. This project was conceived during the Brussels lockdown and questions our relationship to the present and future.
Created in Brussels in 2019, Xén(o)- is both a travelling artistic platform and a research laboratory on feminist and intersectional issues. Founded by the Tunisian artist Ichraf Nasri, Xén(o)- promotes and supports artists through the production of cultural and artistic events with special emphasis on racialized, minoritized and LGBTQI+ artists.

Program
The first evening will open with Horror and King Baxter, a sound performance of eco-feminist science fiction stories during which Baxter and Horror are the sound messengers of a painful age from Earth, calling for a xenofeminist revolt in four chapters: water, earth, air, fire.
Next up is a concert by Laryssa Kim, the Italian-Congolese composer based in Brussels. She transports her audience in a ritualistic experience, an oneiric trance, through pools of sound and loops of voice, sound and rhythm, accompanied by visuals.
The triptych closes with a series of artists’ video screenings on the relationship between women and the world, concerns that range from the quest for roots in Cameroon, a reflection on our ecological impact and a dialogue centred on eco-sex. These pieces deconstruct repressive cultural and social constraints as well as the mechanisms by which women are repressed, and highlight a plurality of female identities.
19:00 – 19:30 Horreur et King (Performances balaineS)
19:45 – 20:30 Laryssa Kim (concert)
20:30 – 21:00 Screening of artists’ videos:
- Ils vendent des t-shirts by Sonia George Eperonnier (4’32)
- A l’ouest by Violaine Le Fur (20’)
- Amor Vegetal by Małgorzata Rabczuk (13’)
To start the evening, Pauline Mikó presents PLUIES, a sound and performance project. A system of sensors and electrodes connected to the leaves of plants and to the artist’s body, generates a bioelectric exchange and transforms it into sound by means of a modular synthesizer. The sound waves are then modulated to produce music. Mixing nature and technology, Pauline Mikó offers a unique sensorial experience that places organic life at the centre of our communities and permits dialogue with nature.
The concert by Cyborg Amzon, alias Diana Dobrescu, transports the listener to a completely different aesthetic atmosphere. From the intergenerational to the interface, Diana Dobrescu, and her digital identity Cyborg Amazon, don an audio costume to regenerate the ecofeminist message and, in the artist’s own words, “to rediscover and transmit the feminine power that was destroyed by the patriarchy.”
The evening will end with a truly gripping experience. Chair futur is an evolving project initiated by artists Małgorzata Rabczuk and Mélanie Peduzzi. It explores and affirms an ecofeminist stance in a future lying between utopias and dystopias. The artists are invited to show a phase of their work by means of a screening. These sequences are meant to be recorded on chips and implanted in different parts of the artists’ bodies during their performances. The sequences can then be viewed by audiences who capture the chips’ data using their smartphones to scan the performers’ bodies.
19:00 – 19:30 Pluies (performance-concert)
19:45 – 20:15 Cyborg Amazon (performance-concert)
20:15 – 21:00 Screening of artists’ videos
